The heroin-overdose death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has caused the media to focus, however fleetingly, on America’s drug problem.
News accounts of the Oscar-winner’s tragic demise typically reference the startling increase in heroin-related deaths in the last four to five years. The problem, reporters explain, is the vast number of Americans addicted to prescription pain meds like OxyContin, many of whom discover heroin to be both cheaper and easier to obtain than the prescription opioid drugs to which they initially became addicted. And fully 40 million of them admit to driving on the public roadways under the influence of those substances!

The Porter Perspective

"The Porter Perspective" is an informational hub for concerned family, friends and community. My role with Recovered4life is a "parent advocate" on the dangers of prescription drug abuse. Our purpose is to put a stop the crisis associated with prescription drug overdoses. Our work includes helping the families and friends who have lost a loved one to this disease.

I have met with and will continue to meet with congress people on the state and federal levels. I presented my plan and lawmakers agreed that changes need to be made. Legislation is a very slow process. But through organizations like ours we can apply pressure though the private sector to speed things up.

I have an action plan. You can easily partner with me to spread the word on and use the power we have together to stop this epidemic.

Email me or call me personally on my cell .

Washington DC Trip
In May I traveled to Washington DC along with Avi Israel from "Save the Michael's of the World" and Tish Westrup "Angel Foundation" to speak before congressional committees organized by New York Senator Gillibrand of NY, Senator Charles Schumer, Congresswoman Kathy Hochul, from Kentucky Congressman Hal Rogers, From California Sen. Diane Feinstien and Rep. Mary Bono Mack and a meeting with Health and Human Services, the FDA, CDC, Surgeon Generals Office and others hosted by Congressman Brian Higgens from New York.

I was effective in bringing a need to immediately stop the filling of CASH IN HAND NON CONFORMING PRESCRIPTIONS by pharmacists. This and the good samaritan dial 911 legislation are current goals for R4L. Go to info@recovered4life.com for information on how to help.

Sacramento Trip
My wife Valerie and Itraveled to Sacramento for a Senate sub committee meeting representing all who have lost a loved one to the drug pandemic. I spoke to the committee on the prescription drug epidemic, made an impact and met new friends including:
Assemblywoman Beth Gaines

Deputy Director of Alcohol and Drug Programs

When it comes right down to it, if you ask for one thing for your children, it is for their survival.

Dana Hills High School held a "Wake Up" Town Hall Meeting after recent death of student Chris Black. Guest speaker Vernon Porter and a panel made up of students and parents desperate to stop the killing spoke to a room full parents and kids desperate for help!

RANCHO NIGUEL PARENT MEETING
Recovered4life held a community organization meeting to bring hope and help to the hundreds of families who have lost a child. The pictures below are not those of gang members or delinquents or long term drug addicts. These kids are highest level achievers in school academics, school and sports who made a choice to take a pill at a party that stopped their breathing or caused cardiac arrest. Research shows the human brain does not fully comprehend consequences of behavior until 25 years of age.

PLEASE ACTIVELY SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUTH IT IS OK TO CALL 911 WHEN SOMEONE IS IN DISTRESS

Thanks to all of you who against impossible odds got this bill to pass. We hope this is the first of many victories to come in stopping the unnecessary deaths of youth in our state and nation. But we are not quite done!

Even though the Good Samaritan bill AB472 had Senate support Gov. Brown threaten a veto. The intent is to save lives not condone drug use.

Please email Quintin Mecke quintin.meke@asm.ca.gov with your comments and support as he is spearheading the new bill for Rep. Tom Amiano. In a phone call to Vernon Porter, Quintin affirmed the Assembly member commitment to getting a bill passed that will allow kids to call 911 for help when their friends are in trouble.
